If you didn't know, Oma means grandmother in German. Although I called her by a German name because that was the heritage of my grandfather, she was very much Italian. She was loud, outspoken, and let everyone know exactly what she was thinking. She loved to cook and I never left her home hungry. Being the youngest of all the grandchildren, I would be lying if I said I didn't get some special treatment. She loved me with every ounce of her being. When I was little, I remember the countless hours she would play Barbie dolls with me, read me bedtime stories when I would spend the night, and always hold me in her arms as we rocked in the big green rocking chair in her family room. There is something so special about being a little kid and spending time with your grandparents. Over the years, I grew up, but she stayed the same silly, loving Oma that I adored and would even try to fit me in her lap even though I had far surpassed the age and size of being able to rock in that rocking chair with her.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe summer before the 8th grade was one of the hardest I had experienced. After fighting breast cancer as best as she could and enduring chemotherapy, the doctors shared with our family that they didn't believe my Oma would make it much longer. Cousins, aunts, uncles, and relatives all gathered around her during this time. We stood by her on the good days and reminisced about all the great times we’ve had and we stood by her on the hard days when did everything we could to comfort her. It’s heartbreaking to see how cancer can transform someone into a completely different person. Her beautiful brown, curly hair, was now gone. The lively Oma, who used to sing and dance in the kitchen, now lay still in her bed, too weak to move on her own. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIn July of that summer, she took her last breath. When you’re young, sometimes it can be hard to understand these situations. All I felt was pain and sadness and confusion as to why I didn't get to grow up with her in my life. It is hard to look past our own grievances in times of hurt, but as I grew up I looked at the situation from her perspective. I realized how strong she was. How during that time she was in an incredible amount of pain, yet never complained. How she must have been fearful to leave her own family, yet never wept. How her identity was stripped from her and not once did she take pity on herself. Through the hardest time in her life she was her strongest and her beauty shone the brightest. Although breast cancer was the last chapter of her story, it did not define her. She did not allow it to drive out all the light and love she experienced throughout her life. As I got older and made it through high school and college, I was able to gain more confidence in who I was. I started to feel that I had a lot to offer to this world. Even though there still are plenty of times that I doubt my worth, whether that's when I compare myself to others, or maybe a relationship doesn't work out, I always have to remember that I am still enough. On the day you were born you were enough, today you are enough and you will continue to be enough for the rest of your days. No mirror, no person, no relationship, or any other circumstance gets to determine that. Am I deserving enough to be loved forever? Could somebody really want to spend their life with me? What I have come to realize is that when I worry, I am standing under the clouds. I am shielding myself from my own happiness, when there is a world of goodness and hope in the sunlight. There is a family who loves me, companies who will believe in me, and there is a respect for myself that I am most worthy and deserving of the kind of love that little girls spend their days dreaming about. My goal is to choose the sunlight each day. To remind myself to believe in my own talents and values. To seek out the goodness each person and each experience brings to my life. To find the pockets of light, amongst the hard parts in life where I can be happy and my truest self and bask in those moments. We ended up leaving twenty-four hours later, on Sunday night, to drive to Laughlin, Nevada. We stayed the night in a hotel and the next morning we drove out to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Once we got there, we took a bus to the head of the South Kaibab Trail. I was excited to be there since I had never visited the Grand Canyon before. My friend had heard that the “Ooh-Aah Point” on the Kaibab Trail was one of the best places to catch an amazing view that would have you saying “ooh and aah”, hence the name. The trip down the trail wasn’t too difficult, although trying to avoid the donkey droppings was a bit challenging. Once we made it to the “Ooh-Aah Point” we saw the amazing view that everyone had spoken of. It completely took my breath away. We ended up sitting there for a while just breathing in the air, gazing out on the vastness of it all. The lack of other hikers on the trail made for a very peaceful experience just feeling the wind pass by, while we soaked it all in. It was a nice break from the busy city and speeding cars that so often fill our everyday life. Even though it was only one day, we made memories that will last for the rest of our lives. Sometimes you just have to say yes, jump in the car or hop on a plane, and see where it takes you. So, unfortunately, I grew up only seeing a version of him affected by this horrible disease. On the outside, he still smiled and loved, yet on the inside I know it was utter chaos for him. Over the 8 years he battled Alzheimer's, I watched as he went from forgetful to not being able to speak at all. He could no longer recognize close family and friends or turn his thoughts into sentences, besides the occasional sound or word. It was agonizing witnessing this happen to him so slowly and having absolutely no chance at stopping it. I have always resented this disease as it hurt that the rest of my family had memories of what he was like without it, yet I never would. They would tell me that he was a kind man, who cared for others and loved me so much, yet I yearned to experience that for myself. I wanted to be able to hear about his life, his childhood, his stories. I wanted to make him proud as I grew up and have him involved in all the major milestones in my life. There was so much more to my story with him that I never got the chance to experience. Towards the end of his life, things began to take a turn for the worse, and we knew it was time to say our goodbyes. As I walked into his room for what would be the last time, I was greeted by the sweetest words of “hi honey” ever so clearly, the most I had heard him speak in while. Those were his last words before he passed away, coincidentally the day before my birthday. To me, those two words were exactly what I needed and he knew that. I may not have other memories of my time with him when he was well, but even in the final moments of his fight, he left me with a sign to remind me of his love for me, that he knew me, even if his brain did not remember, his heart most certainly did. \u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI only hope that one day, there will be no more pain brought on by this disease and a cure can be found. If you or a loved one has been directly or indirectly affected by Alzheimer's my heart truly feels for you. I have known the pain, and I am deeply sorry. Just know that although their mind and body may change, their heart remains the same and their love for you has not ever wavered. Sometimes things are going great - they make us feel like we're on top of the world. Other times, it's as if we can't catch a break - the bad news just keeps stacking up and it feels as though we're drowning in it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThis is particularly evident within larger life moments - losing a loved one, a messy breakup, or the loss of a job. Through our work with suicide prevention here in California over the past few months, we discovered something I never knew before - the leading cause of suicide in older folks is the loss of a loved one, followed by the loss of a job. It makes you realize that we're letting people get caught up in a moment of pain rather than encouraging them to give themselves time to heal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe ZOX community was massively inspirational in this design - reading stories you all have submitted has made me cry more than I'd like to admit. One thing I've noticed when reading these submissions is the constant string that weaves them all together. Though each one is unique in its own way, the part that makes my heart feel more full than anything else is knowing that you were strong enough to make it through. While the situations explained within the stories are the most heartbreaking things I have ever heard in my entire life, perseverance is the piece that makes it inspiring.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThat's right. Most of you don't realize it yet, but your stories inspire others to be strong. Even when I feel like bad news is over my head, I'm inspired by others who saw it through and came out stronger because of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eIf you're in a difficult place in your life and you need a reminder that things will get better, this is it - I made this little hug for your wrist, just for you.
