In today’s world, distractions are everywhere - we’re bombarded with notifications on our phone begging for our attention while the people around us are asked to ‘hold on just a sec, I need to take care of this.’\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eThat was my life for a long time, and to be honest, it’s still something I find myself struggling with once in a while. Being present means wherever I am and whoever I’m with - they have my full attention. It means focusing on what’s in front of me instead of what’s next. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMost importantly, though, it’s valuing the time we get with others.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eA few months ago, there was a dad on Linked In that wrote a story that was enough to make any grown man cry. Reading it made me reflect on some changes I wanted to make in my own life, so rather than try to paraphrase, I wanted to share the link directly with those of you who may not have seen it. Part of the idea behind these four \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eombré\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e designs is that they’re things we work at - we grow into them, just as the letters on the inside grow as you read them. These four designs, to me, were symbols of us growing into the best versions of ourselves over time. It was this concept that through whatever may come our way, we would persist. I’m Still Here is the epitome of this idea - that no matter how dark it is around us, if our flame is still flickering, we’ll light up the room. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eFor this ZOX, I want to do something I’ve never done before.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAfter reading this, I want you to close your eyes and imagine your life, 20 years from now. Where are you living, and who are you with? What are you most proud of? What hopes have you realized, and what fears have you discovered were completely unfounded?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI found that in doing this, I was able to reflect on who I am right now - it was almost as if I was seeing the impact of the decisions I’ve made recently for their long term results. One important realization I had when taking a moment to write this letter was that I was proud to still be here - that I hadn’t given up, even when things were tough or failure seemed imminent.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy hope for this ZOX is that it’ll inspire you to be the person your older self is proud of. It was some sort of video card error that caused the image, but when I pointed it out and said I loved it, he laughed - the design I liked was an accident - a 'happy' accident.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhat I love about this so much is the fact that a mistake brought me joy - an error created something beautiful. In a time where I feel so on edge, so stressed with everything going on, this little hug for my wrist has become an instant favorite. My hope for you with this ZOX is that it'll help you stay calm, even when things seem to be out of control. While we may all feel strong now, the truth is that the things ahead will try their best to break us, to reduce us to a feeling of being less than normal. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy hope for this ZOX is that it encourages you along your journey, whatever it may be. Each of us have different struggles, but the feelings of anxiety that come from them are the same - we're fearful of the unknown, and how capable we are at fixing it. When those thoughts start to creep into your mind, remember that we're all here, cheering for you as you regain your strength and rise again, stronger than before. The reminder here is something I believe each of us need now more than ever - to let go of everything we hold against ourselves. Our imperfections, flaws, mistakes and past are things that we all carry with us, often without even realizing how much we allow them to impact our decisions. We doubt our abilities because we made a mistake last time we tried, we feel ugly because we ate too much pizza the night before. We let toxic relationships of the past define how we believe we should be treated in the future, as though that’s all we deserve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThroughout everything going on right now, one of the most powerful ways we normally comfort one another (hugs) is not as feasible given social distancing. But what we can (and should) do right now is focus on who really needs a hug the most right now - ourselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eMy hope for this ZOX is that it reminds you to take a moment for you. But what if, instead of only looking at the things we want to change, we take a moment to give ourselves a little credit for the wonderful human being we already are? \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI always say there's a big difference between complacent and content. Complacence is lazy - you're a bump on a log as my mom would say, and you can't be bothered to do much. Complacent is bad. Content, on the other hand, is what this little reminder is all about. Content is being grateful for where you are and what you have right here, right now. Sometimes, the key to being content is just giving our own brains a little TLC every now and then by remembering how far we've come. It's good to congratulate yourself, it's good to be happy about your accomplishments. Just because it's a new year doesn't mean we need to label everything that happened in the past as 'not good enough.' \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI think my fear is that the new year always has us focusing on what comes next without ever taking a moment to reflect on all we've made it through already.
