Story:
When I think back to when I was growing up, I have a lot of great memories. I had fun riding bikes with my neighbors up and down the street we lived on, playing soccer on the weekends with friends, and having picnics at the park to name a few. On the flip side, I can also remember many things I disliked. Some of those being: finishing my vegetables before I was allowed to have dessert, having an early bedtime, and worst of all…chores. What was probably a matter of minutes of chores as a kid, felt like hours. Doing the dishes, sweeping, making my bed, clearing the table after dinner, walking the dog, the tasks felt endless!

I remember my parents even set up an incentive program to motivate my brother and me. If we completed so many chores during the week we were rewarded. Even then, with the possibility of a new barbie doll or video game, I still dragged my feet when it came to getting these chores done. I often asked my parents why we had to do so much, and my inquiry was eagerly met with “Because I said so” or “You’ll thank me in the future”. Two answers in which I did not understand the meaning of.

Well fast forward to my early twenties and I couldn’t be more thankful for those years of chores. Now, when I do the dishes, make my bed, or vacuum the floors I feel a sense of responsibility. I see that my parents weren’t just using my brother and me to do their jobs but rather showing us how to take ownership and pride in our hard work. There is no better feeling than working hard for something and seeing your effort pay off at the end. Even though doing chores is just a simple example, it instilled the work ethic in me to know that good things take hard work and effort. It’s funny how these lessons are so hard for us to understand as kids, but as we grow up, we are able to read between the lines and uncover the true meaning of these life lessons.
