Smiley Vase

Handcrafted in Sweden by Sofi Gunnstedt, Smiley Vase brings together the refined traditions of porcelain craftsmanship and the playful visual language of contemporary culture. Featuring one of the artist’s recurring smiley motifs, the vase explores the contrast between a symbol often associated with everyday digital communication and the permanence of handcrafted ceramic work.

Made in porcelain and painted by hand with oxides, the piece carries the same sculptural presence found in Gunnstedt’s larger vessels, translated into a more intimate scale. Designed to function both as a decorative object and a vessel for flowers, the wall-mounted form transforms a simple stem into a living composition.

Originally inspired by the single flowers that remain after a bouquet has faded, Smiley Vase offers a place for overlooked blooms to continue their life. Mounted on the wall, flowers become part of the artwork itself—creating a changing, organic expression that shifts with the seasons and the viewer’s choice of arrangement.

Balancing humour and craftsmanship, tradition and popular culture, Smiley Vase reflects Gunnstedt’s fascination with the meeting point between historical porcelain aesthetics and modern visual symbols. The result is a piece that feels both familiar and unexpected, playful yet carefully considered.

As this is a handcrafted item, variations in form and finish will occur.
